Hello Peeps!
I understand that we get nervous when we have interviews coming up. I am guilty of this too but, a couple of people wear a brave face and you think "This person isn't nervous"... lol!
The truth is, we are, we just won't let it show.
Here are things that could help.
1. Think of it as a discussion.
Yes! a discussion, not a test, not an exam.
2. It is about you.
Not about the job,
the interviewer or the company but, YOU! strange but true. Firstly, If you are not qualified, you wouldn't be getting interviewed.
Secondly, there are others who are also qualified for the same job as you and, they will be interviewed too but, what distinguishes you from others?
Simple! Your personality! So, yes, it is about you.
3. Think before you talk.
It is okay to forget things in an interview but, do not give yourself out, Don't let the interviewer know that something slipped your mind. Take time to answer the question, Remember it is a discussion, so, while you are thinking, keep them engaged and do not let the room fall into utmost silence except you are waiting for the next question. Basically, don't be the cause of the silence.
4. Elaborate.
It is not an exam so there is no objective answer for any question. Even if it is a question that requires a "Yes or No" answer, make a sentence or a couple of sentences.
5. Don't concentrate on things that are already on your CV.
Remember they have seen that CV maybe more than once. let those interviewers know that you have more in stock than just qualifications and working experience.
Let us look at two scenarios.
Scenario 1:
Interviewer: Tell me about yourself.
Interviewee: My name is Rita, I am 20 years old, I was born and brought up in lagos by my parents. I graduated with a first class from unilag with a BSC in Microbiology... bla bla *boring*
Scenario 2:
Interviewer: Tell me about yourself.
Interviewee: My name is Rita, A graduate from the University of Lagos with a certificate in Bio-chemistry. I am a jovial and friendly person, I love to make friends. I work well in teams and I have leadership qualities. I work well under pressure as much as I like to avoid such situations but, when it presents itself, It does not affect my output. I have entrepreneurial skills. I am always ready to learn new things and explore new methods of achieving an Objective or a goal. I am also good at multitasking. Thank you.
Now, who would you employ if you were the interviewer?
6. Take note of the questions.
when asked about your qualifications, don't talk about yourself.
7. Personal questions can be answered.
No matter how uncomfortable, give an answer. For instance, If you are asked, "your CV says you are single but, Do you have a spouse"? If your answer is NO but you don't want to answer, give a lively answer like "I do actually, but we are yet to meet" or "I used to, but not right now, Life happened". The interviewer will not bother asking "what happened?" or "But you have had one before right?"
8. The greatest weapon, YOUR SMILE!
If you are not a smiler, this should not be a problem, just flash a smile once in a while.
Haha! I hope this helps someone out there.
Aspire to be your own BOSS!
That should be your ultimate goal.
All the best.
With Love
Rita-R
